January 7, 2026 – ‘s-Hertogenbosch – Schelstraete Equine Law is pleased to announce that Dr. Zachary R. Calo has been appointed as the firm’s Head of U.S. Practice, effective 1 January 2026. Operating from New York, Dr. Calo will oversee both sports law matters and civil litigation in equine affairs, ensuring comprehensive legal support for clients.
Extensive global experience in sports law, civil litigation, and dispute resolution
Dr. Calo brings an exceptional breadth of expertise in both sports law and civil litigation in equine matters to Schelstraete Equine Law. He has represented athletes and federations in disciplinary and anti-doping matters before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and other tribunals and served on multiple mediation and arbitration committees worldwide. His experience also includes senior legal roles in London, Doha, and Washington D.C., as well as dispute resolution positions at the EEOC, the Hague Court of Arbitration for Aviation, and various sports arbitration bodies. In addition to that, he is a frequent keynote speaker at global conferences.
Academic career
Alongside his legal practice, Dr. Calo has served as a Professor of Law and lecturer at leading universities in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. His academic work spans law, sports law, mediation ethics, and international arbitration, and he has authored and edited numerous books and over 100 scholarly publications.
