The Premiere Jumping League

Launch of the Premiere Jumping League Signals a New Era for Showjumping

On March 30, the equestrian world was introduced to an ambitious new showjumping league: the Premiere Jumping League. Positioned as a global competition designed to reshape the future of showjumping, the league is backed in part by U.S. billionaire Frank McCourt and his goal to modernize the sports’ structure, visibility, and commercial appeal. At its core, the PJL seeks to move showjumping toward a more cohesive and narrative-driven format that aligns with modern sports entertainment while preserving the discipline’s traditional values.

A Global Format with Record-Breaking Prize Money

The PJL is set to feature 16 teams competing across 14 international venues, with its first season scheduled from March to October 2027. Organizers have characterized the rider selection process as an “innovative recruitment system”, drawing on a pool of 250 of the world’s leading riders.

A defining feature of the league is its unprecedented financial commitment. PJL has pledged a total prize fund of $300 million over its first three years, including $100 million in its debut season. Notably, these figures significantly exceed those of excising showjumping circuits.

Zahir Rahman, General Counsel of the PJL, emphasized the league’s financial position: “Our PJL executive team is building a competition on a foundation of integrity and long-term sustainability, all with the largest prize pot the sport has ever seen – $300 million.”

Beyond headline figures, the league’s financial model is intended to broaden access to elite competition, making the sport more economically viable for riders without significant personal backing.

Attracting Talent and Expanding Audience Reach

Early indicators suggest the Premiere Jumping League is already gaining traction among top showjumpers. High-profile names such as Scott Brash, Harry Charles, and Laura Kraut have featured prominently in the league’s launch campaign, signaling strong athlete engagement.

In addition, the PJL is placing significant emphasis on global accessibility and fan engagement. The league has committed to free-to-view broadcasting, a strategic move designed to expand global reach and lower barriers for new audiences.

From a technological standpoint, the league also aims to enhance the spectator experience through advanced data and broadcast innovation. Chief Technology Officer Robert Occhialini noted that while showjumping inherently offers “precision, power, and split-second drama”, it has historically lacked infrastructure to fully translate this experience and detailed knowledge to global audiences.

In a further bid to modernize the sport’s image, the Premiere Jumping League has engaged producers behind the Netflix and F1 series Drive to Survive. This collaboration suggests a strategic focus on storytelling and athlete narratives, potentially mirroring the transformative impact such content has had on Formula 1’s global popularity.

Chief Executive Officer Neil Moffitt highlighted this approach: “To support our ambition, we’re letting fans go behind-the-scenes of one of the world’s most enigmatic and elusive sports, granting unprecedented access through free-to-view broadcasting.”

PJL Leadership and Governance

The PJL’s leadership team combines experience from sport, hospitality, law, and governance. Founder Frank McCourt is no stranger to the equestrian sector, having previously held a 50% stake in the Global Champions Tour before selling his part in 2022.

One of the notable leadership members is Lisa Lazarus, CEO of the at The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA), who will support the PJL on horse welfare and regulatory practices. Her involvement underscores the league’s commitment to placing horse welfare at the center of its operations, as Lazarus commented: “Ensuring that the horse is at the center of all decision-making is fundamental. All equine sports are inextricably intertwined and united around our shared love and respect for the horse. PJL’s core principles have set it up for unprecedented success.”

Legal Considerations

From a legal perspective, the launch of the Premiere Jumping League raises several important considerations within the highly regulated framework of international showjumping.

Firstly, the relationship with governing bodies such as the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI). Questions may arise as to whether PJL events will be integrated within existing regulatory structures or operate independently. This could have implications for rider eligibility, ranking systems, and potential conflicts with FEI-sanctioned competitions.

Second, rider contracts and team structures are likely to become more complex. Issues such as exclusivity clauses, image rights, revenue sharing, and cross-border employment arrangements will require careful legal structuring given the international nature of the PJL.

Finally, horse welfare remains a critical legal and ethical pillar. With increasing public and regulatory focus on horse welfare, the PJL’s governance framework will need to align with evolving standards on veterinary oversight, transport, and competition conditions. The involvement of experienced advisors in this area is therefore a notable and necessary step.

The Untapped Potential of Dressage

The question arises whether a similar format could be successfully applied to the global dressage sector. While showjumping has experienced significant commercial growth over the past decade – driven in part by figures such as Jan Tops and leagues such as Global Champions Tour and Global Champions League – dressage has remained comparatively static in its commercial development and global reach.

Despite its strong heritage and technical appeal, dressage has yet to fully capitalize on the opportunities offered by modern sports entertainment formats. A more structured, narrative-driven competition model combined with enhanced media production and accessibility, could unlock new audiences and commercial pathways. As initiatives like the Premiere Jumping League seek to redefine engagement in showjumping, they may also serve as a blueprint for innovation in dressage.

Conclusion: Disruption or Evolution?

The Premiere Jumping League represents one of the most ambitious attempts in recent decades to redefine professional showjumping. With substantial financial backing, a strong media strategy, experienced leadership, and a clear focus on audience accessibility, the league has the potential to reshape both the commercial and cultural landscape of the sport.

At the same time, its long-term success will depend not only on attracting audiences and talent, but also on navigating the complex legal and regulatory framework that underpins the international equestrian world.

Whether the Premiere Jumping League ultimately disrupts the existing order or integrates into it, its launch marks a significant shift toward the professionalization and globalization of equestrian sport.
